Les organisateurs attendaient la houle depuis une semaine. Ils ont lancé la compétition lundi à six heures trente du matin, dans des vagues d’un mètre cinquante à deux mètres, une hauteur modeste pour ce spot de surf. La finale pourrait avoir lieu dès mercredi, car les sites spécialisés prévoient que la houle faiblisse à nouveau en milieu de semaine.
Les concurrents locaux se sont illustrés lors de cette première journée : les Tahitiens Michel Bourez, Manoa Drollet, Heiarii Williams et Tamaroa Mc Comb se sont qualifiés pour le troisième tour, tout comme leurs compatriotes métropolitains Jérémy Flores et Joan Duru.
Parmi les têtes d’affiche, Kelly Slater, Mick Fanning, Damien Hobgood sont sortis victorieux de leurs séries.
« Je suis vraiment content que les Tahitiens se soient si bien débrouillés, et on a de belles vagues pour débuter la compétition, on a de beaux tubes même si la hauteur n’est pas trop importante » a déclaré à l’AFP Pascal Luciani, l’un des organisateurs, membre de la Fédération Tahitienne de Surf.

Tamaroa McComb (Tahiti) a gagné cette manche d'ouverture et s'est propulsé directement au round N° 3. Il a battu le champion du monde N° 6 en titre Mick Fanning (Aus)ainsi que l'ASP rookie Adam Melling (Aus)
