HENRI HAITI SAYS HE KILLED STEFAN RAMIN BY SHOOTING HIM WITH HIS HUNTING RIFLE

Henri Arihano Haiti was put in jail today, at the state prison of Nuutania. Haiti is being charged with the murder of the 40-year-old German tourist Stefan Ramin, whose remains were found burned in a smoking campfire in the Marquesan island of Nuku Hiva, French Polynesia, in the South Pacific. The decision to keep Henri Haiti in detention was taken by the French Polynesian authorities following his custody hearing on Wednesday. What actually happened the dramatic day of the murder remains a mystery for the time being, though, as Henri Haiti appears to have given several different versions of the sequence of events to the investigators in charge. A preliminary hearing with the judge shall take place shortly.

But already two important facts have been established: Henri Haiti shot and killed Stefan Ramin with his hunting rifle and subsequently sexually assaulted Ramin’s partner, Heike Dorsch. The theory indicating greed as a motive has apparently been denied several times by the suspected murderer during his audition. In some of the several recounted versions he indicated to be “miles away from that”, related a source who has close access to the investigation.

According to the interview of the victim’s partner published this Thursday by the German newspaper Bild, the 31-year-old Marquesan hunter acted in a cold-blooded way. “He tried to kill me too”, said Ms. Dorsch to the Bild. She speculates that he probably meant to burglarize their sailboat after killing her.

PREVENTIVE DETENTION

While the investigation continues to establish the probable sequence of events, the judge has determined that Henri Haiti shall be kept in detention under the accusations of “aggravated murder” (and not of assassination, which would imply premeditation) of Stefan Ramin, and of sequestration and aggravated sexual assault of Heike Dorsch. The state prosecutor, Mr. José Thorel, has asked that the suspect be kept in jail while waiting for his preliminary hearing. Henri Haiti made use of his right to have counsel and time to prepare his defense before the preliminary hearing with the judge. The hearing shall take place before Saturday. Until then, Henri Haiti is being kept at the state penitentiary of Nuutania. He risks life imprisonment if found guilty after a trial.

The hunter from Nuki Hiva, Henri Haiti, 31, surrendered to the police on November 28, after 50 days on the run, hiding in the jungle of the island. He is being charged with the murder of Stefan Ramin, who arrived with his partner in Nuku Hiva on a sailboat, and whose body was found by policemen in a campfire on October 9. According to the victim’s partner, Stefan Ramin had gone with the suspect on a goat hunting day trip into the island the day after they had met. According to her, Henri Haiti came back to find her a few hours later and told her that her partner had been hurt and she’d better follow him into the woods.

Seeing no reason not to trust him, she immediately followed him as requested. “One minute everything was peaceful, and the next minute he turned around, pointing the gun at me. I stared at the barrel and I thought, ‘Now you are going to die’”, explains Heike Dorsch to the Bild. Henri Haiti tried to rape her after he tied her up to a tree in the forrest, but she managed to set herself free and ran away, guided to the coast by the noise of the waves.

Throughout the international media, mainly in Germany, the theory of cannibalism has been explored. Nevertheless, the prosecutor seems to have definitely eliminated the possibility of an act of cannibalism, refusing “to even mention the word again”.

A reconstitution of the sequence of events shall take place in the South Pacific island of Nuku Hiva in the coming months.
